Lesson 4 in the Life of Joseph Series.
Joseph is in prison at the same time that Pharaoh's chief butler & chief baker are put in prison.
He interprets their dreams which happen just like Joseph told them.
Scripture is Genesis 40.
We are continuing our study about Joseph from the book of
Genesis. He is the son of Jacob (AKA Israel) and Rachel. He has 11 brothers and
his younger brother (Benjamin) has the same parents. Joseph’s brothers were
upset when their father gave him the coat of many colors. Then he had two
dreams that showed them bowing down to Joseph. The coat and the dreams made
them hate Joseph. So, they made a plan to get rid of him.
They threw him in a pit (water well) and sold him to
Midianite traders. The traders took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar.
Potiphar was captain of the guard and an officer of Pharaoh (ruler or king of
Egypt). But, Potiphar’s wife decided she wanted Joseph and when Joseph told her
no, she lied to Potiphar.
Joseph was put in a prison where the king’s prisoners were
kept. He stayed faithful to God and God blessed him. Joseph was put in charge
over the other prisoners and the captain of the prison didn’t question anything
Joseph did.
After a time, Pharaoh’s chief butler and chief baker made
Pharaoh angry. He was so angry at both officers, that he put them in prison. It
happened to be the same prison where Joseph is being held. The captain of the
guard turned the chief baker and chief butler over to Joseph to take care of.
They were in prison for a while.
Pharaoh’s butler and baker each had a dream while they were
in prison. They both had a dream the same night. They each had a different
dream, though. Joseph saw them the next morning and asked them why they looked
so sad.
The butler and baker told Joseph that they both had a dream
and there wasn’t anyone to explain the dreams to them. Joseph replied that “The
interpretations belong to God; but please tell them to me.”
The chief butler told his dream first. He said that there was
a vine in front of him in his dream. The vine had three branches and it budded
with blossoms and there were clusters of ripe grapes. Then he had Pharaoh’s cup
in his hand. He took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put
Pharaoh’s cup in his hand.
Joseph told the chief butler that the dream meant this: The
three branches represent three days. In three days Pharaoh will return you to
your job and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand like you did before. Joseph
asked him to remember him and mention him to Pharaoh to release him from
prison. He told the butler that he hasn’t done anything to be put in prison.
The chief baker saw that Joseph did well with the butler’s
dream, so he told Joseph his dream. He said that there were three white baskets
on his head. There were all kinds of baked goods in the top basket for Pharaoh.
The birds came and ate the food from the basket.
Joseph told the baker that the three baskets are three days.
In three days, Pharaoh would hang him from a tree and the birds would eat from
his body.
The third day was Pharaoh’s birthday. He had a feast for all
of his servants. The chief butler was given his job back and the chief baker
was hanged. This happened just as Joseph told them. But, the chief baker forgot
all about Joseph.
The application pack has the standard Q&A worksheet with the teacher's answer sheet. It includes a maze and a crossword puzzle. The crossword puzzle had a teacher's answer sheet. There is also a student application worksheet with Scripture Posters. The Scripture Posters are great for bulletin boards or wall decorations for any Bible lesson that applies.
Added later are the lapbook printables (right) for the butler and baker while Joseph was in prison. There is one for the butler, one for the baker and one for Joseph with them. I also added a worksheet (left) for the butler and baker. The worksheet has the same questions as the lapbook printables.
