Rebekah at the Well is lesson 7 in the first quarter of a year
of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening.
Last week we
learned about Abraham and his wife Sarah. They had a son named Isaac. God
promised Abraham that his descendants would be so many; they would be like the
stars in the sky. Abraham and Isaac are found in the book of Genesis (24).
There are two parts of the Bible and Genesis is the first book in the Old
Testament.
Abraham
decided to send his servant to find a wife for Isaac (his son). Abraham’s servant
took 10 camels with him and traveled to Mesopotamia. He had the camels kneel
down outside the city by a well. It was in the evening. The women came to the
well to get their water. Abraham’s servant prayed to God that the woman that
was right for Isaac would say “drink and I will give your camels a drink also”
when I ask her to draw water for me.
Before he
was done praying, Rebekah came to the well. She had her pitcher on her shoulder
to carry her water. She was very beautiful! When Abraham’s servant asked for
water, Rebekah gave him and the camels water! He gave Rebekah two bracelets and
a gold nose ring.
He asked Rebekah
about her family and asked if there was a room where he could stay. Rebekah told
him that there was a room for him and his camels. Abraham’s Rebekah’s brother
Laban (La’ ban) went to the well after he saw the new jewelry that his
sister was wearing. He told the servant to “Come to our home! We have a room
ready for you and the camels.”
Abraham’s
servant said “I can’t eat until I tell you why I am here. I am Abraham’s
servant. He is very wealthy (rich). He had a son when he was very old, and I was
sent here to find a wife for his son Isaac. When your sister did the things
that I was waiting for, I knew she was the woman that God thinks is the right
one for Isaac.” Laban said that this is what God wants. Take Rebekah to be Isaac’s
wife.
Abraham’s
servant took out clothing and jewelry made from silver and gold to give to
Rebekah. He also gave gifts to her mother and brother.
Isaac was in
the field when he saw the camels coming. The servant told Isaac where he had
been and everything that had happened. Isaac married her and he loved her.
