Temptation of Jesus

 For this week's lesson, I used Put-in-Order Cards. The holder is shaped like a French fry holder to remind the kids that Jesus fasted, He was hungry and weak. But He said NO to temptation!

Last week we studied the baptism of Jesus. Jesus went to the Jordan River. Jesus found John and wanted John to baptize Him. Jesus had never sinned, but He was baptized to show by example what God wants us to do. They went in the Jordan River and John baptized Jesus all the way under!

Our lesson today is found in Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13 and Luke 4:1-13. After Jesus was baptized, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. It’s the desert. He will be tempted by Satan. Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights. That means He didn’t eat … anything. Think about that! Ask the students how many times they were going to eat today, and how hungry they would be if they skipped one meal, Jesus didn't eat for 40 days!

After that time, (40 days) He was hungry. Satan came to tempt Jesus. Discuss how He must feel, tired, hot, miserable, etc.

Discuss temptation. What is temptation? What is a temptation for them?

#1 Satan said, “If You are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."  Jesus replied, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Jesus is telling Satan that we can't just live on bread, or other food for our bodies. Jesus is telling us that we need His Word. We need to study the Bible to know how God wants us to live.

#2 Satan took Jesus up into the Holy City and put Him at the top of the temple. He said, “If You are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels save You.” Jesus answered this time saying, “It is written again, you shall not tempt the Lord your God.” (The Holy City is the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem)

#3 Satan took Jesus up to a really high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. Satan told Jesus that I will give You all these things if You will fall down and worship me. Jesus answered Satan by telling him: “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” Remember, this is our Bible scripture for today. One of the 10 commandments is You shall have no other gods before Me. (Exodus 20:3)

Finally, Satan left Jesus and angels came and ministered to Him.

Remember that Jesus said NO to temptation. He was weak, tired and hungry and could have given in, but He didn’t. God expects us not to sin and that means staying out of trouble and doing what our parents tell us to do.

As I told the Bible lesson, I had the students fill in their chart. I had everything cut, they just glued the parts on as we talked.

The students worked on the above project as we did the lesson, after the worksheet, we used these Put in Order cards. They include info that we have studied about Jesus through today. I made the holder look like a French fry container, since Jesus fasted and didn't eat. This is a fun, quick review that they will take home.
