Samson Part 2

I made a temple visual for Samson to stand in and we will finish the booklets that were part of last week's lesson. You can see the first part of Samson and the booklet (and more) here.

Review: Last week we studied Samson. An angel came to his mother and told her that she would have a son. She was not to drink wine or eat unclean meat. She could not cut his hair. They named him Samson and he was very strong. Remember, Samson killed a lion with his bare hands. He fought a lot of people and he fell in love with a woman his parents didn't want him to.

Samson was a judge for Israel for 20 years.

Today's lesson is found in Judges 13-16.  We start the next chapter and Samson was visiting a woman in Gaza. The Gazites found out that Samson was in the city, and they decided to wait for Samson to leave. They were going to be very quiet and kill Samson in the morning. At midnight, Samson took the doors of the city gate and the two gateposts with the bars, put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill! 

Then, Samson fell in love with Delilah.

The Philistine officials approached Delilah and told her they wanted Delilah to find out where Samson's strength came from. They wanted to be able to control him and tie him up. They told Delilah that each of them would give her 1100 pieces of silver to do this. 

Delilah agreed and wanted to know where Samson got his strength from. The first time, Samson tells Delilah “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, then I will become weak, and be like any other man.” So, Delilah tied him up with the seven fresh bowstrings and the men were waiting in the room. She said, “The Philistines are here, Samson!” But Samson broke the bowstrings, and they didn't know how Samson was so strong.

Delilah came to Samson again and told him to quit making fun of her! She said, "No more lies, tell me your strength!" Samson told her that “If they bind me securely with new ropes that have never been used, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man.” The men were waiting, and after Delilah tied up Samson with new ropes, she said “The Philistines are here, Samson!”  Samson broke those ropes!

Again, Delilah told Samson to stop making fun of her and tell her how he was so strong! Samson told her “If you weave the seven locks of my head into the web of the loom...” So, of course that is what she did, and when she said, “The Philistines are here, Samson!”, he woke up and still had his strength.

 

Every day, Delilah complained to Samson that if he loved her, why didn't he tell her the answer? He became so tired of it, that he finally told her that if he ever shaved his head, he would not be strong anymore. Samson fell asleep on Delilah's knees, and she called in the Philistine officials. After Samson's seven locks of hair were cut off and he woke up, he didn't have the strength to fight off the men.

They put out Samson's eyes, put bronze shackles on him and made Samson be a grinder in the prison. 

BUT... Samson's hair started to grow back! The Philistine officials gathered together to celebrate the capture of Samson. They brought Samson from prison to perform for them. Remember, Samson is blind, and he asked the boy that was guiding him to let him feel the support pillars of the temple. Samson said he wanted to lean on them. There were about 3,000 men and women on the roof. They wanted to watch Samson put on a show for them.

Samson prayed to God to have the strength to take vengeance on the people that took his eyes. There were two pillars in the middle that were the supports and Samson put a hand on each of them. Samson asked God to let him die with the Philistines! Samson used all his strength to push the pillars, and the temple fell down on top of everyone! Everyone died and there were more people killed here, than he killed his whole life! 

I made this visual with a Styrofoam 4" x 12" base and the columns are 12" x 1.5" tall. I cut 12- 2" x 1.5" pieces of leftover package Styrofoam for the base and tops of each column. I wanted to purchase Wilton cake columns to use for this, but they are EXPENSIVE!! So, this is what I came up with. I plan to use this visual with Paul too!

This is the Tales of Glory Samson. He is only about 5", and I found him on eBay. His hair comes off, so I can use him for different parts of the lesson! I used Gorilla Glue to hold everything together, and I inserted two round toothpicks on each end of the columns to help support them and keep them together. I also used a 5" x 12" piece of cardstock for the roof. I used a copper metallic piece and I folded over 3 sides, maybe 1/4" for the front and sides. 

We started these booklets last week with the beginning of Samson, and worked on them during the lesson today. I had the kids fill in the blanks as we studied, but it can be used as a review if you prefer not to have interruptions during the lesson. It is only available in black & white.  I also added some chains to use with both lessons. They have the same facts about Samson on each chain that the booklet has. The kids can cut, tape, staple or glue the chains together and you have a project that coordinate together! They are black & white (I printed on gold paper). Click here to download.
