The Triumphal Entry of Jesus and the Lord's Supper

Scriptures: Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-19; Luke 19:28-48; John 12:12-16 When Jesus came close to Jerusalem, He sent 2 of His Disciples to go to the next village and told them that there would be a donkey and her colt tied together. Jesus told them to "Untie them and bring them to Me." And if anyone says anything to you about taking the animals, tell them that The Lord has a need for them, and they will let you take the animals.
The Disciples went and did what Jesus told them to do. They brought the donkey and her colt.
They laid their clothes on the animals and set Jesus on top of the donkey. This animal hasn’t been ridden before, but Jesus sat on it and rode to the people.
There was a huge number of people and they spread their clothes on the road. Some of the people cut down branches from the trees and spread the branches on the road. They wanted to show Jesus how much they loved Him. They knew Jesus was special.

Some of the people went before Jesus and some of them followed Jesus. They cried out: Blessed is Jesus! They shouted ‘Hosanna’. That means Savior or one who will save others.
(I carried the 'water jug', explained that this was what they would usually see, a woman carrying the pot, not a man.)

There were so many people in Jerusalem, the Disciples asked Jesus "Where should we set up for the celebration"? Jesus told Peter and John (Luke 22:8) to look for a man carrying a water jug. Back then you wouldn’t see men carrying the water jugs because the women did that. Jesus told them that when they found him, they were to follow him home and tell the owner that they were sent by Jesus and He wanted to use the upper room.

It was a large upper room, furnished and prepared. That’s where Jesus told them to go and make ready for the Passover. It was evening when Jesus came to be with the Disciples.
(Wood tray at Hobby Lobby for $1.49 and chalice at Salvation Army for 99c, and spray painted by my husband ☺. Super easy [for me]!)
After that, Jesus showed them how to take the Lord’s supper.  (Mark 14:22)

Jesus took the bread, prayed and broke it. Jesus gave the disciples a piece and said “Take, eat; this is my body.”

Then Jesus took a cup. He gave thanks and handed the cup to them and they all took a drink. Jesus said “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.”

Jesus showed the Disciples how He wanted them to take the Lord’s supper. Jesus wants us to remember Him and think about His death. By doing that, He showed us how we are to do it. He also said it was a new covenant, like a new pledge or promise. After Jesus died, then this new covenant is how God wants us to worship Him. So we don’t follow the Old Testament laws after Jesus died. We worship the way Jesus showed the Disciples.

Display: I tossed coats & palm leaves down with Jesus on donkey. I have a large jug to use when I talk about the man with the water jug, and a chalice and tray with bread for the Lord's Supper.
I pre-made these and had the students pull the tab during the lesson. To assemble the tab house, cut the parts out, and make note that the tabs on the bottom of the sheet will fold in half, so do not cut. I used an X-Acto knife to put a slit on the 2 sides of the upper room window. (Do not cut out window.) Slide the photo sheet through the window as you see it, with the pictures on top and the extra under the house. I used Aleene's Tacky Glue to glue the tabs to the sides of the pictures. You can see that they are folded, and glued on the small rectangle at each end.
You can print the slider here.
The above class discussion and take home project printable is fill-in-the-blank questions to remind the students what they can do to show they love Jesus. This has been updated and the download has your choice of color or black & white. The black & white can be printed on green paper to save ink. Print it here.
You can print the worksheet here.
(These are the updated triumphant entry visuals.)
They are the same as the visuals but are black & white.
Bible Verse: Matthew 21:11
These are for the Life of Jesus lapbook. There are 3 printables for this lesson. You can print them here:

For the lapbook worksheet, the kids will cut out Jesus and the donkey and glue them to the worksheet, Jesus first, then the donkey. You can print it here.

You can find all the download links for the Life of Jesus lapbooks and the lapbook worksheets here.
