Jesus has Breakfast on the Shore & Returns to Heaven

This is a couple of lessons combined and includes Jesus having breakfast with His disciples, the great catch of fish and Jesus returning to heaven.

Review: After Jesus died on the cross, He rose out of the tomb, just like He said He would. Jesus met with His disciples and told them what He wanted them to do. Read John 20:30-31. We’re not told everything, just what God thought we need to know.

Lesson: Scripture is John 21:1-Acts1:11. The disciples were waiting to see Jesus again, and Peter decided to go going fishing. Six other disciples tell him they would go also. (Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the brothers: James & John and two more disciples not named)

The disciples were at the Sea of Galilee. They fished all night, but they did not catch any fish. In the morning, there was a man on the shore, and they didn’t know who He was. He asked them if they had any food and they said no.

He told them to “Cast the net on the right side of the boat and they would find some.”

(John 21:6) When they tried to pull up the net, it was so full of fish, they couldn’t pull up the net! (Another miracle) John told Peter that it’s Jesus! Peter was so excited that he pulled on his coat and jumped into the sea and swam to the shore! The other disciples went in the fishing boat and dragged it to the shore, pulling the full net behind them. (About 100 yards) The net was too full to pull into the boat!

Once they landed on shore, they saw a fire with fish laid on it and there was bread also. Jesus told them to “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” Simon Peter went over and dragged the net onto land. It was full of large fish! There were 153 fish, and the net wasn’t torn! Jesus told them to “Come and eat breakfast!”

When they went over to Jesus, He gave them bread and fish to eat. This is the third time that Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He rose from the dead. (John 21:14)

Some days later, the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. Judas didn't go, since he betrayed Jesus for the 30 pieces of silver. (Matthew 28:16-20) When they saw Jesus, they worshipped Him. AND Jesus told them what they were to do. This also tells us what we are to do:

Jesus told the disciples to Go out into the whole world and make disciples of all people. Jesus said to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the disciples to teach the people all the things that He has taught them and remember that He will always be with them. 

 

Forty days after the resurrection of Jesus, Jesus returned to heaven after He had talked to His disciples. He is sitting on the right side of God in heaven. (Acts 1:3; Mark 16:19-20)

The disciples kept staring up into heaven where Jesus had gone! There were two men in white clothes standing beside the Disciples. The two men asked them "Why are you staring at heaven where Jesus went? Someday, Jesus will return the same way that He left."

And they went to Jerusalem worshipping and praising Jesus.

I collected sticks for the students to “cook” foam (or cardstock) fish (Accucut jumbo fish) over the fire like Jesus did. I also had a basket of bread to eat. ( I handed out round crackers and goldfish... Happy time! They love snacks and they are rare in my class!)

Picture on left: I have been using the blow up fire found here for my class. I needed something quick and easy for my Wednesday night class and I found this one. They love it just as much and it is so much easier to use! And, I don't have kids knocking the parts over.

We gathered around the campfire for the Bible lesson, then did our worksheet and craft at the table.

(Yes, I borrowed my granddaughters campfire! I have the boat and Jesus on the beach on the same table. It looks like the beach is next to the water.)

(I have done this project with my classes for years. They really do love it!) You need blue cups, with a small hole in the bottom, the yarn [or string] is about 12" long and inserted through the hole. I made a loop and knotted it at the top, then Jesus is glued to the other end of the yarn. He can go up inside the cup to return to heaven. The kids glue Jesus to the yarn, and the cotton to the cup.

Here is today's lapbook worksheet. The kids will cut out Jesus, the boat, bread and the campfire with the fish and glue them to the worksheet. I also gave the kids fish stickers to add to the water. You can print it here.

I My husband ☺ made a campfire with wood screwed to a square piece of wood. I crumbled up red, yellow and orange tissue paper and put on the bottom to cover the wood and placed sticks across the logs. I made “flames” out of red, orange and yellow cardstock and stuck them in.
